Chavez attacks, missiles with money from Moscow

anti-aircraft due to the maxi-loan.
Grows tension with Colombia

MOSCOW Russia has granted a loan to Venezuela for more than $ 2 billion to buy nearly a hundred tanks and advanced missiles to be used as anti-aircraft system. This is a deal, writes The New York Times, which shows the desire of Moscow to support the anti-American President Hugo Chavez.

In his weekly message on TV last night, the Venezuelan leader said he had obtained the loan during the trip to Russia two weeks ago. The purchase of new weapons takes place at a time when relations between Venezuela and neighboring Colombia is particularly tense because of the decision of Bogota to allow access to the U.S. to seven Colombian military bases. For Chavez this is a dangerous threat to the safety of Venezuela. "With these missiles - he said the Socialist leader - will be very difficult for them (the Americans) bomb us." In recent years, Venezuela has signed agreements with Russia to buy weapons worth about $ 4 billion.
